I just lost my data file. Suddenly the list disappeared and so I shut down and reopened. The ticker list showed garbage. So how do I avoid this in the future? Is there a way to automatically save backups of my data file so I can go back to an older version? I had approx 50 ticker symbols, so rebuilding the file takes a little time.

Which version of the software are you running? Can you send me the data file for analysis? support@personalstockmonitor.com

When you shut down, did you save the data file or did you exit without saving?

Anatoly,

I had a similar issue yesterday. I was running excel and excel crashed, I went and opened the (already open) 9.1.4 PSMG and all the data was way off, all the gains showed as 30.000 plus percent. I closed the program down and after restarting the computer (Windows 7) I opened PSM and only one out of the 8 or so folders showed in my account. I had made a backup only days ago so I was up and running without to much trouble but I second the request for a way to do automated scheduled back ups.

We have a preliminary version with the fix for this issue at http://www.personalstockmonitor.com/_downloads/psm/psm916g_install.exe

As it turns out, it was caused by bad data coming from Yahoo, causing problems reading back the file after it was written. This problem actually affects all versions of PSM going back to 6.0. We have now added filters both for data coming from Yahoo and when reading data back in from the file, so bad data should no longer cause these problems. Also, people who kept their software running until after the Yahoo data stream was fixed will have no problems.

As far as automatic backup, we already have a manual backup function under the File menu, which many people don't use. We will probably add some form of limited automated backup, most likely when installing new versions of the software, so at least you have one level of backup in case you need it. But if you want regular scheduled backups, there is plenty of backup software that does this already.
